Love is - chewing gum, pictures, history

Fragrant chewing gum with the romantic name Love is appeared in the domestic space in the late 80s of the last century. It was produced by the Turkish company Intergum, and it wrapped its delicious products in wonderful inserts with images of a boy and a girl in love, signed with intricate phrases.

It is thanks to these liners that Love is chewing gum and pictures about love have captured the minds and hearts of many generations of children in Russia. And of course, thanks to its taste. Strawberry, cherry, orange, banana, lemon flavors… Which one did you like the most?

At that time, there were practically no competitors for chewing gum, except perhaps "Turbo", but this is more in the boyish part. The various Wrigley Spirits and Double Mints were not heard or seen.

So, about chewing gum. In it, of course, it was the inserts with a couple in love that were of greater value. They were collected by everyone: from young to old, pictures about love were taken so strongly for the soul. By the way, Intergum used chewing gum inserts without the permission of the real author, Kim Grove Casali.

The story of Love is

Kim is from New Zealand. At 19, she left her country to travel the world. At 25, she was already living in the United States, where she met her future husband, Roberto Casali. It was for him, on paper napkins, that Kim drew funny black-and-white pictures with a boy and a girl in love. A little later, pot-bellied characters saw the light on the pages of the Los Angeles Times newspaper. It was in 1970. Since then, the comic has been published weekly in every issue of the paper.

The idea of signing pictures with aphorisms about love was inspired by the film “Love Story”, in which the phrase “Love means never having to say you're sorry” was used as a slogan, which means “Love means: never have a reason to say that you're sorry."

In 1975, Kim met Bill Asprey, an English designer and animator who, since 1978, has been creating a color, already approved by the author, version of comics for the British newspaper Mail on Sunday. It was the color pictures of Bill Asprey that Intergum used under its own brand.

But thanks to her, these cute pictures about love and falling in love got to Soviet children. Bill Asprey publishes new stories literally every day today.
