Ian Somerhalder is a great actor, which I can’t argue with. Just look at how he brought his hero Damon Salvotore to life, his sarcastic smile is aerobatics, and I generally keep quiet about his eyebrow movements: when he raises them every time he hits someone hurt with a word.
Damon is very selfish, he does whatever he wants and does not pay attention to the fact that this act can make his loved ones suffer. But it is with this selfishness that he saves Elena and Stefan, because there would be nothing between them, but the two of them know what is more precious than a family there is nothing and no one. As Stefan once said: “You know Damon that I will take a bullet for you, and you for me” - this is true brotherly love.
As for Ian Somerhalder himself, as I said, he is a very talented actor, and it seems to me that he will look in any role from: a psychopathic, desperate vampire to a vulnerable, sensitive sufferer.
