On the eve of March 8, a rare man does not think about buying a bouquet of flowers for his beloved. It can be like traditional roses, lilies or eternally spring snowdrops and tulips. For a good bouquet, the male half will have to pay at least $ 20-30. However, there are also bouquets that cost hundreds of dollars, and some flowers cannot be bought at all even on the black market, which is in demand among many gardening collectors.
In this regard, we were interested in the question of what flowers are the most expensive in the world. Here's what our little research showed.
The most expensive flowers in the world
The rarest is Middlemist red. History has known this beautiful flower since the middle of the 19th century, when the British gardener John Middlemist brought to Europe from China a single specimen of an unusually beautiful scarlet rose. The Chinese flower was named after its European discoverer and "boyfriend". John Middlemist rooted the rose in a greenhouse in the United Kingdom, where his direct descendant still grows.
After some time, the flower was uprooted in its Celestial homeland, its native name was safely forgotten, and only 2 copies of this plant remained in the world - British and New Zealand. Scientists for a long time were at a loss as to how the second copy survived to this day. With Great Britain, everything is clear - this is the merit of Middlemist, and in the New Zealand garden, scientists believe, there lives a descendant not of a Chinese plant, but of a British one. It is said that one of the bushes that belonged to John Middlemist was sold without his knowledge. It follows from this that specimens of this plant, once stolen from the garden of Middlemist, may still be found in the British environs near the greenhouse.
The rarest flower in the world last bloomed last year (in 2010) at the Chiswick House greenhouse. The chief gardener of the greenhouse notes that she bears a great responsibility for the safety of this unique flower on the globe, and the flower requires a lot of care and attention. The heaviest is Rafflesia or Corpse Lily . The habitat of Rafflesia is the tropical rainforests of Indonesia and the Philippines. The lily was discovered by the Italian scientist Odoardo Beccari in 1878 during his stay on the island of Sumatra. Under natural conditions, the flower can only be found in the unique Sumatran climate; it is grown much more often in botanical gardens.
This is a parasitic plant, the lily does not synthesize the organic substances it needs, therefore it parasitizes on damaged trees and vine stems. It all starts with seeds that germinate under the bark of the liana, after a year and a half a bud appears, after another 9 months - a bud, which then blooms on the ground in the form of a brick-red flower for only 3-4 days. During the flowering period, the flower reaches 3 meters in height, the diameter of the petals is one and a half to two meters, and the weight is about 10 kg! Rafflesia also cannot reproduce on its own, it needs the help of an animal that will crush the fruit and transfer the seeds to a new place.
The flower got its second name due to the “surprisingly disgusting” smell, reminiscent of rotting meat. It is this cadaverous smell and flowers, which in their entire appearance resemble decaying meat, that attract flies. The latter take an active part in the pollination of the flower. The most common species is Rafflesia Arnoldi.
The brightest is "Rainbow Rose" . The roses you see are not someone's fantasy or Photoshop product. This is the work of the Dutch designer Peter Van de Werken and Den Bosch. Rainbow Roses flowers are absolutely real, despite the fact that in the picture they seem artificial and painted with bright colors.
The owner of a flower company in South Holland came up with a technology that allows each rose petal to be painted a unique color. For such a transformation, only Dutch roses of the Vedella variety 60-100 cm tall with an open flower of at least 13 cm are suitable. Flowers with a split stem are placed with a specially prepared solution containing dyes. The stem absorbs this water naturally, and the petals absorb it as they grow, resulting in the most picturesque flowers in the world.
The cost of one rose is 10-20 dollars. You can only buy a bouquet of roses, you cannot order a bush.
Later, having felt a wave of popularity, they began to produce not only multi-colored roses, but also other rainbow flowers - gerberas, chrysanthemums, tulips, lilies, etc. alphabetically. Such flowers are an original and very pleasant gift for March 8th. More photos here .
The most expensive flower in the world and the rarest orchid is the Kinabalu Gold. This type of orchid in nature can only be found on the island of Borneo on the highest mountain Kinabalu (in Malaysia), later the orchid was transported to the Kinabalu National Park.
You can recognize this unique flower by its striped coloring and almost horizontal petals. The flowers of the plant appear at the age of 15 years, in the inflorescence usually there are no more than 6 large fragrant flowers.
"Gold Kinabalu" blooms in April-May and gives only 1 shoot, which can be separated for transplantation. You will have to pay about $5,000 for it. Honestly, for that amount you can buy a whole garden.
The most expensive flower in the past and the most expensive tulip today is the “King of the Night”. This tulip was bred presumably in the 15th century. During the "tulip fever" for 1 bulb of the "King" you could get a herd of sheep, 4 bulls, 4 pigs, 4 tons of wheat, 8 tons of rye, 2 tons of oil, 300 liters of wine, 4 tons of beer, 300 kilograms of cheese, and in addition - to demand a silver goblet. In the modern world, 1 onion of a black and purple beauty can be bought for $ 20.
The most expensive and beautiful rose "Pierre de Ronsard" . Modern roses with a vintage twist. A trailing shrub of large, slow-opening roses with heavy cream or ivory buds with bright pink margins. The price for one such rose is $20.
